Early in 2023, Zheng Linghua, a 23-year-old student, committed suicide after months of online harassment and cyberbullying due to her pink hair. After receiving her graduate school admission offer, Zheng posted an image of herself and her grandpa, who raised her, on social media. This led many bullies to fabricate rumors about her relationship with her grandpa and harass her as they linked her pink hair with prostitution. After six months of battling against cyberbullies, Zheng passed away by suicide as she suffered a relapse of depression.
This series is created in remembrance of Zheng and the many more who experienced such harassment for their free expression of themselves. The images in this series extend beyond this incident, aiming to shed light on many societal constraints that continue to trap and oppress women today.
"Pink is not the crime, violence is."
"Only enemy wants us weak."
At the crossroad of arrows, we are born.
Iron,
wooden
or, plastic
break it
if it doesn't point to
your heart.
Metallic circle
reflecting light.
Is it a ring?
Or a chain?
The invisible vine,
twining,
in which,
she breathes.
Let her voice
come out as her voice.
No melody,
she sings.
Glorifying suffering only continues sufferings.
